Benarasi Sarees and Bengali weddings 2020

Being a Bengali, whenever the word Benarasi sarees come to mind, it goes straight to Bengali wedding. Bengali wedding without Benarasi saree would be like Bonnie without Clyde.
Though nowadays, a lot of Bengali people opt for other bridal dresses like Lengha. And even though Lenghas are beautiful and intricately designed. But in my opinion, nothing beats the captivating artistry of Benarasi Sarees.

Benarasi Sarees in the Making

A Banarasi saree is a saree originally produced in Varanasi, an old city which is also called Benares (Banaras). Banarasi is the finest woven silk know for its intricately design work with gold and silver brocade or zari. The decorative zari work and engravings make the saree quite heavy.
Banarasi is not anymore limited to being the Bengali wedding attire anymore. Now there are a lot of Benarasi with lighter artistry and engraving that are worn for any party and festive occasions. Though the theme of the saree stays the same with golden and silver Zari work with floral designs and strings of upright leaves.
At least three craftsmen work together to make one Benarasi saree by using power-loom. One artisan weaves the silk, and one dyes the silk, where the other one has to engage the bundle of silk, which creates the power ring.
The designs are drawn previously on a graph paper. It is imprinted as a pattern for the punch-cards. During the competition phase of the weaving procedure, this will be used as a guide for threads. So you see Benarasi Sarees are very intricately made with a lot of effort.

My experience hunting down the perfect Benarasi Sarees for my dream Bengali wedding

Benarasi shopping can be overwhelming, especially if you are a bride to be. I know everyone will going for the powerhouses when it comes to sarees in general. Living in Kolkata, I know when it comes to buying sarees, famous shops Priyo Gopal Bishoyi, Indian Silk House, Adi Dhakeshwari Bastralaya, Traders Assembly takes first precedence.
But today, I like to give a shout-out to a local small shop with a saree collection on par with the above-mentioned well-known saree shops. This shop isn’t as well-known as the other famous saree shops in Kolkata. This shop is one of the hidden gems when it comes to saree collections in Kolkata.
I got married in February of 2020, and I know the hassle of finding the perfect Benarasi saree for your big day. And me being into art, I had created this vision of my perfect Benarasi that I couldn’t find anywhere.
Priyo Gopal Faridpur Bastralaya is an independent small shop that has a branch at Hatibagan and the other at Behala(Priyo Gopal Agency). They claim themselves to be specialists at catering to a wide range of collection of Banarasi Sarees. The best part about the shop is that they handle every customer very personally.
When I described my definition of my perfect wedding day Benarasi, the owner listened and took notes and said, ‘don’t worry we will have your designer Benarasi Custom made’.
Now I at that point we have been to all the other popular shops. And I knew the quality of Benarasi I wanted would at least be around INR 15k cause that’s how the other Benarasi specialist shops priced their high-quality wedding Benarasi.
The designs are drawn previously on a graph paper. It is imprinted as a pattern for the punch-cards. During the competition phase of the weaving procedure, this will be used as a guide for threads. So you see Benarasi Sarees are very intricately made with a lot of effort.
But to my surprise, Priyo Gopal Faridpur Bastralaya managed to make my custom designed high-quality Benarasi at INR 10k. So I decide to buy all my wedding Benarasi sarees from Priyo Gopal Faridpur Bastralaya from the Hatibagan branch. And overall, it was a great shopping experience. The owner handpicked most of the sarees.
And I can say I got a lot of compliments about my wedding saree lineup. The owner guided me throughout the shopping process, even handpicking sarees himself for me. And I must say he is pretty experienced at reading people’s minds and catering to customer needs.
Let me know if you like the collection. And trust me when I say they look way more awesome in real life than in the pictures.
